Constructed in 1972 to recreate a traditional fishing village, Binibeca Vell (Binibequer Vell) in Menorca is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed dwellings and Moorish arches so typical of this beautiful Mediterranean island. Carefully designed by the architect Antoni Sintes to sit alongside the picturesque old harbour, Binibeca Vell is a popular family resort. The pedestrianised area has a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars which are great to meander around, safe in the knowledge that these streets are traffic-free. There is also a 24 hour medical centre, an information office and a well-stocked supermarket. Holidaymakers will find plenty to do in and around Binibeca Vell, including entertainment for toddlers and teenagers alike.
Binibeca Vell and the more traditional Menorcan village of Binibeca are connected by a beautiful sweep of shoreline and the beach of Cala de Binibeca, just a short walk from Binibeca Vell. This large cove, sheltered by sand dunes, has fine white sand and a gentle gradient making it a favourite for families with young children. It also boasts one of the best beach bars in Menorca, Los Bucaneros, which started life as a fisherman’s hut!
Within a short drive of Binibeca Vell are several other safe sandy beaches including Binissafuller, Cala Biniparratx, Cala Biniancolla, Punta Prima and Alcaufar. For those looking for a change of scenery without getting in the car, a ‘road train’ connects Binbeca Vell with Binibeca, Cala Torret and Punta Prima.
The nearest town is Sant Lluis (San Luis), less than 5 minutes by car, where there are banks, shops, quality restaurants and great local bars. The capital Mahon (Mao) and the airport are only 15 minutes drive from Binibeca Vell.
