What our clients say about Villanet

Situated on the west coast of Menorca is the beautiful town of Ciutadella, originally the island's capital until the early 18th century when the British transferred the seat of power to Mahon at the opposite end of the island. However, Ciutadella retained its role as the religious capital of the island and the town still boasts a rich heritage of places of worship including the recently restored 14th century Cathedral of Menorca, the most outstanding of the island's ecclesiastic buildings.

The name Ciutadella is derived from the word 'citadel', meaning a fortified city. Founded by the Carthaginians in the 4th century, it was during the 17th century that many of Ciutadella's most beautiful buildings were constructed in the Italian style for the island's noble families. A wonderful combination of grand palaces and mansions, beautiful churches, impressive town squares, narrow twisting streets and the charming old port, Ciutadella is a must for anyone visiting Menorca.

As well as its reputation for sightseeing, quality shopping and fine dining, Ciutadella is the setting for the most important festival in Menorca: the notorious Sant Joan Fiesta. Every year on 23rd & 24th June thousands of visitors flock to the town to see the traditional thoroughbred black Menorcan horses skillfully ridden through the thronging streets and squares to the delight of the crowd, some of whom are brave enough to try to 'touch the horse's heart'. In fact, as you drive into Cuitadella from Maó, the first thing you see is an impressive statue of a handsome rearing black stallion!

Another celebrated 'structure' on the way in to Ciutadella is the Naveta d'es Tudons, a rare prehistoric burial monument which is claimed to be the oldest roofed building in Spain (and some even say in Europe!).

The coastline around Ciutadella has many incredible beaches and coves, some of which are only accessible by boat. Cala Algaiarens is a delightful 'virgin' beach which is reached by car and a short walk. Cala Morrell, just outside Cuitadella, is a small sandy beach and harbour where there is some great snorkeling as well as swimming.
