The sleepy hamlet of Llucmaçanes (Llumesanas) in Menorca is situated approximately five minutes drive from both the island's capital town of Mahon and the much smaller but charming 18th century town of San Luis (Sant Lluís). A picturesque settlement (population circa 200), Llucmaçanes is surrounded by open countryside complete with vineyards and quiet country paths that are ideally suited to walking and cycling. The local shop that caters for most requirements is owned by a friendly Menorcan family.
Originally consisting of just a handful of houses, Llucmaçanes is a typical Menorcan village with whitewashed farmhouses and a pretty parish church dedicated to St. Gaieta standing in the old village square. In August the village holds its annual Festes de Sant Gaietà, the purpose being for the local inhabitants to honour their patron saint and enjoy themselves! This family-friendly fiesta follows traditional lines, including the 'Jaleo' where a thoroughbred Menorcan horse dances amongst the crowd, but also features the very entertaining spectacle of a parade of giant figures - once seen, never forgotten!
Close by are the early Christian Basilica d´Es Fornás de Torelló (dating back to the 6th century) where you can see traces of intricate mosaic floors, and one of Menorca's best-preserved 'talayots' at Torellonet Vell. Constructed from huge stones several thousand years ago, this circular talayot has a diameter of approximately 20 metres and is the highest on the island.
The nearby towns of Sant Climent and San Luis have some very nice bars and restaurants, with an even wider choice in Mahon and Es Castell including some fantastic waterfront locations.
The capital Mahon (Mao) and the airport are only 5 minutes drive from Llucmaçanes.
